Guide Tape Restock: Why Worn Tape Wears Out Your Belts
Guide tape wears out on every flatwork ironer — that part is normal. What matters is catching it before it takes the belt down with it. Worn or stretched tape lets the belt drift off-center, and drift wears belt edges thin long before the belt should need replacing.
What Guide Tape Actually Does
Guide tape tracks the belt across the roller, keeping it centered during the run. A tracer line woven into the tape — a colored stripe you can see at a glance — lets you check tracking without stopping the machine to inspect it closely.
Match the Material to Your Heat Range
CIC stocks guide tape in two base materials, each rated for a different operating temperature. Nomex blend is rated to 575°F, built for gas-heated ironers and Chicago Dryer machines running 450–500°F. Polyester is rated to 480°F, built for lower-heat steam lines — run it above that rating and it browns, stiffens, and snaps early.

What Causes Tracking Drift
A belt that drifts to one side wears out faster and can eventually run off the roller. Worn or stretched guide tape is one cause. Debris and lint buildup on the roller is another. Tension that's fallen out of adjustment is a third — all three need checking when a belt starts tracking off-center.

How do I know which guide tape material I need?
Check your ironer's operating temperature. Running a gas ironer or Chicago Dryer at 450°F or higher, use Nomex. Running a steam line under 400°F, polyester works and costs less per roll.
How do I know my tape is due for replacement?
Watch for visible fraying, a tracer line that's worn away, or a belt that's started drifting off-center. Any of those means the tape is past its service life.
What if I'm not sure which width or length I need?
