Ironer Wax Cloth: How to Pick One and How Much Wax to Use
A wax cloth spreads wax across the chest of a flatwork ironer. This guide covers how to pick a cloth, when to wax, and how much wax to use. The tips come from a Tingue sales manager quoted in American Laundry News and from Laundry & Cleaning News.
Pick a cloth with a pocket
David Rovetto, a regional sales manager at Tingue, tells laundries to avoid wax cloths made from old sheets. The wax melts in both directions and coats the pad too. He says the best wax cloth has "a pocket, a barrier." Read his full list in Flatwork Ironer Fine-Tuning (American Laundry News, 2017).
Wax at the start of the day and at lunch
Rovetto says to scour and wax the chest at the start of the day and again at lunch. A second shift gets the same routine. The process takes about five minutes. He says healthcare laundries should wax a couple of times a day. He says food and beverage plants should wax every couple of hours.
Use one 8-ounce cup, and wax sparingly but often
Rovetto recommends one 8-ounce cup of wax per application. Add wax only when the pocket is cold and limp. With powder wax, skip the wax if the pocket is stiff. Hang the cloth on a rack to cool. Do not drag it on the floor or drape it on the ironer.
Match the wax to your ironer temperature
Rovetto says steam ironers should run between 300°F and 350°F and generally do not need high-temperature wax. He says ironers running 370°F and up need high-temperature wax. CIC sells CIC Euro Flake Wax, High Temp, 20 kg – HTW20. Browse the full Wax & Lubricants collection for other options.
Poor waxing builds wax up on the roll
Laundry & Cleaning News lists poor waxing procedures among the causes of poor vacuum venting. It says wax builds up around the edges of the roll's perforations. The holes get smaller. Airflow drops and can stop. Read the full article.
